What Neuroscience Says About Resting

Sarah De Borja -

With the number of daily tasks and deadlines you encounter each day, among all other things, chances are you will find yourself with little to no rest at all.

This should not be the case.

Rest is a vital part of your life

—and that includes your success, wellness, and happiness. So before getting overwhelmed again, better assess how much time you’ve been giving yourself as a break. Unplugging from everything once in a while will help you stay sane and get you favorable results more than you know. There are a few reasons why.

It lessens stress

No doubt stress is inevitable. Its effects may vary from one person to another. But did you know that chronic ones may suppress your immune system and may increase the risks of you acquiring a disease?

Stressful situations usually double your heart rate and blood pressure. Some also experience increased hormone levels, while others slow down on their digestive functioning. Thus, resting may help prevent these problems through regulating your mind in terms of dealing with stress.

Resting boosts your productivity

A tired brain is nowhere near functional. If you can’t think properly, you are more likely to be unproductive, too.

Compare your brain performance after the weekend versus after you finished a hectic week. You are more energized to take on tasks and other planned activities, proving that an ample amount of rest can help revitalize your brain’s nerves.

This is the reason why more and more companies are allowing, some even requiring, their employees to take breaks within the year. It is good business knowing that their people will come back even more productive than ever.

It may help with the healing process of your body

In any strenuous work you pursue, it is important to rest and breathe for you not to burn out immediately. Whether it may be a 5-minute break from your computer screen or a 10-minute quick stretch, resting will aid in repairing the damages within your body, and perhaps, mind also.

The required amount of rest varies as per your individual needs. If you didn't sleep well, feel angry, or stressed, you may require more frequent breaks.

But ample rest can speed up the process of your body’s repair and recovery.

It also improves decision-making

Resting enhances your ability to decipher and weigh options or choices. Tiring your brain out for too long might have a negative impact on your ability to make decisions.

Regular breathers give you a fresh perspective about things and steer you towards the right direction of what you really want to do.

Resting is vital for creativity

You get only the freshest ideas when your brain is calm and relaxed. Having a time off allows you to value the quiet moments and the reflection time, allowing you to break those creative barriers.
